GLS Director Anne Whisnant ponders the way forward while making a path through the woods.

GLS Fall Application Deadline Extended

Just a reminder to everyone that we have re-opened our application process for Fall 2020 admissions with a new deadline of May 15th. If you know of people who’ve thought about doing a MALS degree, send them our way. Admissions criteria and the application portal can be found on the GLS website. We are also happy to schedule time via email or phone (919-684-3222) to speak with applicants over the phone or via Zoom.

GLS Debuts New Look

Notice anything different about this issue? Readers, you are the first members of the GLS community (other than the staff) to cast your eyes on our new logo! We think the kaleidoscope-like image, designed by veteran graphic designers Jim Jarvis and Pam Chastain, captures the interdisciplinary and individualized facets of the MALS program, while opening itself up to myriad interpretations. What do you see?

Alumna Featured in Duke Gardens Video

GLS alumna Kavanah Anderson (MALS 2017 ) is featured in a new video from Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Kavanah is Youth Education Coordinator at the Gardens. Below, watch her explain how she applied scientific principles to growing techniques to create a beautiful sprial herb garden. The video is part of Home Gardening series featuring videos created by Duke Gardens staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Amy Laura Hall Makes the Rounds

Professor Amy Laura Hall hula hoops at a 2013 Earth Day celebration. Photo by Bernard Thomas.

Professor Amy Laura Hall's words have been published widely, but this photo of Professor Hall hula hooping at the 2013 Durham Earth Day Festival has taken on a life of its own. It has appeared in a number of Earth Day articles over the years, including this Christian Science Monitor piece. Perhaps it's a popular choice because of the joy clearly evident in Professor Hall's smile.

Amy Laura Hall, a member of the GLS Advisory Committee, is Associate Professor of Christian Ethics in the Duke Divinity School and author of four books, most recently Laughing at the Devil: Seeing the World with Julian of Norwich (Duke University Press, 2018). She discusses the 14th century anchorite's visions in the context of illness and the Plague in the April 24 edition of the Prayer Amid Pandemics, a new podcast from Christianity Today.

Wellness and Technology Webinar

Tuesday, April 28

2:00 pm to 3:00 pm

We’re spending more time on social networks, viewing media, and checking our notifications, “likes”, and text messages… and it’s making us feel unhappy, stressed, and lonely. So how do we outsmart our smartphones? How do we stop using our phones in ways that hurt our happiness, start using our phones in ways that boost our happiness, and build the skills we need to cultivate happiness in the context of an increasingly digital world?

In this webinar you’ll discover seven science-based steps for boosting happiness in the digital age and learn practical strategies for developing healthier their digital habits.

Duke graduate students can access this webinar sponsored by the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity through Duke's institutional membership. Find information about how to claim your Duke membership to NCFDD here.
