GLS Update February 20, 2024
GLS Writing Seminars

It’s time for our GLS spring writing seminars! These brief Zoom sessions are highly informal, offering an opportunity to explore some aspects of writing in a bit more depth than can be done in the core course. Kent Wicker will offer some reflections and some exercises, but there will also be plenty of time for questions and sharing of strategies in a workshop setting. Use the links below to register for either or both. (Separate registration for each seminar.)
Getting Personal: The Role of Personal Experience in Academic Writing
Wednesday, February 28, 6:00-7:15pm
What is the effect of using that first person “I” voice in an academic essay? What is an appropriate use of personal experience in academic analysis? Can it tell us things we can’t otherwise know? We’ll examine some examples to discuss their strategies and effectiveness. To register, use the link above.
Three Ways of Looking at a Paragraph
Tuesday, March 26, 6:00-7:15pm
Is there only one correct way of writing a paragraph? What different effects are produced by different paragraph shapes? Is the paragraph evolving to do different kinds of work? In this session, we will examine the paragraph as a changing historical artifact, as an instrument of logical argumentation and as a poetic vehicle of personal style. To register, use the link above.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Kent will also send you some materials for use during the seminar.
