GLS Alumna to Give Public Talk at NC Museum of Natural Sciences

Masters of Our Own Destiny - NC's African American Farmers
Wednesday, February 26
12-1 PM
NC Museum of Natural Sciences SECU Daily Planet Theater (Raleigh)

Melody Hunter-Pillion, a 2012 MALS graduate and a PhD canditate in NC State's Public History program, uses the oral histories of NC’s African American farmers and fishermen to tell the story of how these families have shaped North Carolina and how they are dealing with heritage depletion, land loss and climate change. The talk will also be available via livestream. Visit the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for details.
Call for Abstracts for GradX 2020
The Graduate School and the Society of Duke Fellows invite all members of the Duke community to attend Duke GRADx 2020, to be held Friday, April 3, 4-6 PM on the 6th floor of the Trent Semans Center. A catered reception for all attendees will immediately follow the event.
Duke's annual GradX talks are a bit like TEDx talks, offering the opportunity to share your master's project or other research with the wider Duke community. Check out the archives for past GradX talks by GLS students Andrea Larson (2017), John Bechtold (2016), Ellen Rivers Gambrell (2015), and Max Erdemandi (2014). The deadline to submit abstracts is Monday, March 2.

John Bechtold (MALS 2017) presents at Duke GradX 2016.
Professor R. Larry Todd and Katharina Uhde to Perform Friday

Professor R. Larry Todd, who has taught popular GLS courses such as "The Emancipation of Music" and "Discovering Music," will perform with violinist Katharina Uhde this Friday, February 28, in the Nelson Music Room on Duke's East Campus. See more details here. Don't miss this free evening of exquisite music!
FHI Speaker Critiques the Legacy of Julian Carr and "Lost Cost" Ideology

"White Supremacist or Philanthropist? Julian Carr and Durham's Commemorative Landscape"
Thursday, February 27, 5-6 PM
Classroom Building, Room 229, Boyd Seminar Room
Adam Domby argues that the Lost Cause ideology that emerged after the Civil War and flourished in the early twentieth century in essence sought to recast a struggle to perpetuate slavery as a heroic defense of the South. This was not only an insidious goal, but was founded on falsehoods, including those peddled by one of Duke's primary early benefactors, Julian Carr. As a graduate student, he resurfaced from archives the speech Julian Carr delivered at the inauguration of UNC-Chapel Hill's "Silent Sam" statue, helping spur protests and the statue's ultimate removal. Domby is an assistant professor of history at the College of Charleston. His new book is The False Cause: Fraud, Fabrication, and White Supremacy in Confederate Memory (University of Virginia Press, 2020). Copies will be available for sale after the talk.
Job Opportunity: Duke Reunions Weekend
The Duke Alumni Association is currently hiring PAID student interns for Reunions Weekend (April 17-19)! This is our largest on-campus alumni gathering, allowing you to network with tons of alumni while getting free food and apparel from the DAA! These positions are open to ALL students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional). Applications are due February 27. Please email Madeline Drewry for details.
Institute for Southern Studies Seeks Summer Interns

The Institute for Southern Studies, publisher of Facing South, is now accepting applications for summer internships. An Institute internship is a great way to gain hands-on research and writing experience on issues related to democracy, justice, and sustainability in the South. Internships are paid, typically last 6-8 weeks, and are usually based in the Institute’s offices in Durham, North Carolina. Application deadline is Monday, March 23. See the ISS website for more details.
Call for Presentations: 2020 AGLSP Conference: "History, Heritage & Identity"

Paper proposals are due by March 15, 2020 for the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies (AGLSP) Annual Conference, "History, Heritage & Identity," San Antonio, TX, October 8-10, 2020. The AGLSP is the professional association of GLS programs, faculty and student; Duke GLS is a longtime member. Student papers are welcome: many Duke GLS students and alums have presented at the AGLSP conference.
