GLS Biweekly Update - January 06, 2022

The GLS staff currently are working remotely until further notice due to COVID-19 restrictions. Email remains the best way to reach us. COVID-19 updates for students are available on Duke's Coronavirus Response website.

From the Director

Happy First Day of Class, GLS Friends!

Although we are once again starting up remotely, I want to welcome everyone “back.” I hope that the holiday time provided opportunities for rest, friends, family, and whatever brings you joy. I was pleased to be able to have some days with my husband and our two grown sons and their partners, as well as some warm-weather “porch sitting” with a couple of friends.

We are thrilled this spring to welcome five new students to join our community: Damon Boyd, Peter Crispell, Lightsey Darst, Lucia Foster, and Veronique Koch. I am hoping we will be able to gather sometime in the spring so everyone can meet them. For now, we’re so fortunate to have Kent’s class –virtual at the moment –where they can begin their GLS journey.

I’m also delighted this semester to have three other wonderful scholars teaching for us: Michelle Dove, Amanda Starling Gould, and Bob Healy. I know that everyone in their (packed!) classes is going to have rich and meaningful learning experiences.

As for our staff, we are so glad that Malina Chavez is settling in as our new Staff Assistant and communications guru. She has taken over most of the web management, e-News, and social media duties from Lisa Robinson Bailey, so be sure to follow us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or Linkedin—all of which will be more frequently updated now that she is with us. Please continue to direct any registration, academic policy, financial, or other academic how-to related questions to Lisa, who will remain in the role of Director of Graduate Studies Assistant (aka “DGSA”).

Finally, in the interest of caution in the face of the surging omicron coronavirus variant, GLS staff will work remotely from now until after the MLK holiday on January 18, pending any additional changes announced by the university. At that point, we expect to return to a hybrid schedule that will have someone(s) at the GLS House every day during business hours. We hope we’ll be able to see many of you after that. If you need us in the meantime, drop us an email, and any of us will be happy to Zoom!

Be well!

Warmly,Anne
