GLS Update January 21, 2024
Letter from the Director

Happy Spring 2024 Semester, GLS Friends!
I hope your holiday time provided opportunities for rest, friends, family, and whatever brings you joy. I was pleased to be able to spend time with family and friends and to get a handle on various household projects, including moving contents of my late mother’s storage unit from Durham to Chapel Hill. Fun, I know, but it was a looming task I’m relieved to have behind me.
We are thrilled this spring to welcome seven new students to join our community: Yueqi (Alex) Cheng, Jiayang (Daniel) Ding, Simen Guttormsen, Lydie Johnson, Jamie Palmer, Skyla Wilson, and Vanessa de Jesus. I’m also delighted this semester to have five wonderful scholars teaching for us: our own Kent Wicker, along with Michelle Dove, Charlie Thompson, Jon Shaw, and Paul Manos. Kent and I also look forward to working with everyone finishing master’s projects in our large LS 850 seminar. I know that everyone in their classes will have rich and meaningful learning experiences.
We look forward to seeing you all in classes and events, as well as at random times at GLS House, which will be open Monday-Thursday approximately 10:00am to 5:00 pm.
You can find all four of the staff here at GLS each Wednesday afternoon, when we have our regular staff meetings. Otherwise, we’ll be coming in on staggered days, with Malina and Kent there on Mondays, Anne holding down Tuesdays, and Lisa handling Thursdays. Students are welcome to drop in anytime to use the kitchen, porches, or upstairs student lounge/study/meeting room. If you’re coming by hoping to see someone in particular, definitely email them in advance to set a meeting.
We hope it’s clear who can help with what, but in case it’s not, here’s a primer:
- Academic questions / advice / course planning or troubleshooting / academic resources / finding faculty to work with / independent studies: Anne Whisnant or Kent Wicker (whichever is your primary advisor)
- “How do I” questions about registration, taking classes at Fuqua, drop/add, academic record, finances, bills; scheduling master’s project proposals and exams; Oxford summer program ; Applewhite grants: Lisa Robinson Bailey
- Communications / e-News / GLS website / porch sittings / commencement and other events / use of GLS House: Malina Chavez
Porch sitting will start up after Spring Break in March, when daylight savings has brought us longer afternoons again. Watch for emails about that! And look out for information about our year-end Master’s Project Showcase, set for the evening of May 9, when our graduating students will present their work to the larger GLS community.
Meanwhile, be sure to read these emails each time they come out, as they contain important “must-do” information and links to some relevant campus opportunities. One key “must-do” for everyone is your three required Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) workshops. If you don’t remember hearing about this, check out the information here or ask Anne, Kent, or Lisa.
Getting the most out of GLS is a combination of getting the most out of coursework and taking advantage of the robust co-curricular and extra-curricular offerings around campus. Let us know if we can help you with anything.
Warmly,
Anne
