GLS Express - May 24, 2021
The GLS Express will be on hiatus until August. In the meantime, we will send any updates via regular email to your Duke email address, so be sure to check it regularly throughout the summer. Team GLS wishes you many sunny, happy days and and a bottomless pitcher of sweet tea until we meet again!
Reminder: virtual porch sitting is ongoing through the month of June, so stop by and let us know your summer plans! Join us on Thursdays from 5-6 PM Eastern. The Zoom meeting link will be the same every week.
GLS House remains closed until further notice. GLS staff are working remotely and may be reached via email.
Office Hours with Anne have ended for the semester and will resume in August.

Master's Project Planning Session and Proposal Workshop Scheduled for June
MP Planning Session (June 6)
If you have already taken your fifth course in the program, or plan to take it this summer, you need to register for the Master's Project Planning Session on Sunday, June 6, 2:00-4:30 PM Eastern. This Zoom session will get you up to speed on the process that leads up to the master's project and on to graduation, and fill you in on program expectations for master's projects and proposals. It is required for all full-time students who are in the semester of their 5th class, and all part-time students who are in the semester of their 5th or 6th class. To register, contact Kent Wicker
MP Proposal Meeting (first two weeks of June) and MP Proposal Workshop (June 10)
Are you ready to take the next step and propose a Fall 2021 master’s project? If so, you need to schedule a proposal meeting for some time during the first two weeks of June, and submit your proposal by June 25.
At this point in your GLS career, you will have already taken the required Master’s Project Planning Session, but if you would like some more specific advice about your proposal, Kent will be holding a Proposal Workshop by Zoom on June 10, 3:30-5:00 PM. The format for this workshop (a.k.a. the “prop shop”) is simple: everyone shares their proposals and gets feedback from each other, and from Kent. To register, let Kent know at kent.wicker@duke.edu.
Visit the GLS website for a list of master's project documents and links.
GLS Alumnae Published in Confluence
Be sure to check out the Spring 2021 issue of Confluence, the journal of the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs (AGLSP). Two GLS alumnae, Natayla Machnaigh Barker (MALS 2016) and just-graduated Olivia Merli, have essays in this issue. Natalya, pictured below, was one of three GLS students to present their work at the 2018 AGLSP annual conference. See the Call for Presentations below for details on how to apply to present at this fall's virtual conference.
