GLS Biweekly Update September 13, 2022

GLS staff members continue to work remotely while our HVAC unit is scheduled for replacement. We anticipate returning to a hybrid schedule in October. Email remains the best method of communication.

Opportunities

The Dean’s Research Award for Master’s Students will provide up to $1,000 to fund the purchase of materials and supplies to support research relevant to a master’s student’s degree completion or research/conference travel. Applications open until September 30.

CDVS Workshops: Intro to ArcGIS StoryMaps Pro

September 14, 10:00 AM

ArcGIS StoryMaps is a web application that brings maps, text, and media together to build an interactive digital narrative. Story maps are an increasingly popular form for presenting projects and telling place-based stories. To accommodate the growing interest in the platform, CDVS will be holding two workshop sessions this semester. 

RCR Forum: Tools for Data Management

September 14, 2:00 PM

This workshop will first introduce data management practices for researchers to consider and apply throughout the research lifecycle. This workshop is eligible for 2 hours of Graduate School RCR Credit. 

Environmental Justice: Past, Present and Future

September 15, 5:30 - 7:00 PM

This public event commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Warren County protests in North Carolina. The protests were considered among the earliest for environmental justice in the United States. 

RCR Forum: Digital Humanities Research with Twitter

September 22, 9:30 - 11:00 AM

In this workshop, students will learn the basic processes and considerations of acquiring social media data for research. Subsequent workshops in this series will cover legal and ethical concerns and hands-on work with the Twitter API. This event will be held in person; the same workshop will be offered via Zoom on September 29.
