Master's Project Colloquium Series Begins Today

From Dr. Anne Whisnant to GLS Master’s Project-Writing Students:

The first meeting of this fall’s LS 850 Master’s Project Colloquium will be held today, September 21, at 12:00 noon – the Zoom links for it and for all of this semester’s meetings are below:

Monday will be a time for sharing project topics, talking about work process and present challenges, and helping one another keep on track with what can be a long and lonely undertaking. I would also welcome input for any workshops we can offer this fall that might help people with particular issues – from managing materials to writing process to developing creative pieces for your final submissions.

I have set these meeting times in collaboration with the three students who are actually formally enrolled in LS 850 this semester, but as noted previously, am opening the sessions to all who are still working on projects. In the past we have required attendance for every student still writing (even if you are only in CTN), but given everything that is going on this fall, we have made this optional. Still, I hope many or most of you can join us.

GLS Hosts Weekly Virtual Info Sessions

Spread the word! Each Friday at 10 AM, through October 9, GLS will hold weekly virtual information sessions via Zoom. Word of mouth continues to be one our best recruitment tools, so if you know of someone you think might be interested in the program, please send them our way.

Info sessions are a great way for prospective students to learn more about GLS and to see whether it's a good fit for them. We'll talk about the application process, curriculum, faculty, students, cost, and how Duke employees can use their tuition benefit to help finance their degree. We will make time for your questions as well. Advanced registration is required. See our website for dates and registration details.

The Graduate School Offers Prescription for Persistence Series

The Graduate School has launched Prescription for Persistence, a new video series that outlines 10 strategies for staying the course in graduate school. Watch the second video of the series, Explore Expectations, below.

CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY COLLOQUIA SERIES

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 21, 202O 1:30-3:00PM

LATINX ANTHROPOLOGY, CONSIDERATIONS OF THE FIELD

A virtual roundtable with:

MARIA CRUZ-TORRES Associate Professor in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University and President of the Association of Latina and Latino Anthropologists

ANGELA GARCIA Associate Professor Anthropology Department, Stanford University

Join Zoom Meeting. https://duke.zoom.us/j/95000985298

Latino/Latina/Latinx studies has emerged over recent decades as a vibrant field within and beyond anthropology, as befits its transborder, coyote, oceans connect sensibility. Barrios and borders remain important foci of attention but the field is multiple, addressing political ecology, sustainability, medicine, race politics, gender and sexuality (note the nonbinary X), and more. Our guests will join us for a discussion of the politics, directions, problems, and possibilities.
