GLS Students to Present at AGLSP

A recent GLS graduate and a current student have been selected to be panelists at the 2019 conference of the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs (AGLSP) in Washington DC. Lela Ali (MALS 2019), whose master's project Muslim-led Groups in the Triangle of North Carolina: A Social Network Analysis was awarded a GLS Exemplary Master's Project designation, will discuss her work as part of the panel Exploring Technological Commons. Student Kayla Bloodgood will share her research, Mapping Harlem: Destabilizing Racial Identity and Solidarity in "The City of Refuge," as part of the Black Explorations of Common Ground panel.

Last Call for Peer Writing Groups

Writing for a small group of fellow students can provide you with valuable feedback and help you keep on track.  If you would like to join a peer writing group for this semester, please contact Kent Wicker at kent.wicker@duke.edu by 5 PM on Tuesday, October 1.

GLS Homecoming Open House

Coming Up Next Week

Don't forget to mark your calendar and RSVP for the GLS Homecoming Open House on Friday, October 11, from 4-6 PM. Stop by for light refreshments and good company as we kick off Duke's Homecoming weekend. RSVP via email or call 919-684-3222. Duke alums: be sure to register for Homecoming events campus-wide on the Duke Alumni site.

Please note: If you are planning a Spring 2020 master's project, you have just two weeks left to hold your proposal meeting. (Deadline Friday, October 11). Contact Dink as soon as possible to get it on the schedule.

  • Fall Break - Saturday, October 5 - Tuesday, October 8
  • Bookbagging begins for Spring semester - Monday, October 21 *SEE SPRING SEMINAR LINEUP*

Events and Happenings

Porch Sitting with Anne

Mondays, 5:30-6:30 PM - Director Anne Whisnant invites GLS students, faculty, and alumni to join her on the porch on Mondays from 5:30-6:30. Come share a chat, a drink and some snacks! No registration or RSVP needed, just drop by.

Screen/Society will show the 1981 Agnes Varda film Documenteur, a semi-autobiographical portrayal of a newly single French mother and son who struggle to find a home in the unglamorous underworlds of Los Angeles, this Thursday, October 3.

Screen/Society Fall Film Series

Screen/Society provides ambitious and entertaining film programming for the Triangle community, specializing in regional theatrical premieres of global and independent art films, and repertory programs including international classics, Hollywood genre works, and director retrospectives. The free screenings take place in the Rubenstein Arts Center's Film Theater. All screenings are free and open to the public. See the full fall schedule here.

GLS Homecoming Open House

October 11, 4-6 PM - Join us for our second annual Homecoming Open House on Friday, October 11, at GLS House. We would love to see you there. Registration is now open for alumni who plan to attend Homecoming events campus-wide. Be sure to look for the Graduate Liberal Studies icon (pictured at left) under Groups so you can add your profile and connect with other GLS grads.
