Lumpia, Laughter, and Long Nights: The Filipino Family Dinner
Description
The goal of my project is to explore Filipino food culture. I focus on Filipino dinners and
their many components, including the food, stories, people, and traditions. My approach for the
project is through documentary filmmaking because the value of Filipino food culture and
Filipino dinners cannot be fully expressed just by words. In addition to the film, there will be an
event aspect during the Duke Center for Documentary Studies Spring Celebration. This event
will allow others to view my film, experience the food from a Filipino food truck present, and
hear additional stories about the culture. The materials used include digital cameras for content
capturing, my laptop for Zoom interviews, and Adobe Premiere Pro for editing. There are many
significant takeaways from conducting the project. One is the reiteration of the importance of
family in the Filipino culture and food as a way for us to connect. Home is not a place; it is the
people and all the aspects that bond you together. Another finding is how valuable stories and
traditions are for the Filipino identity and values. These things are passed down through the
generations to connect back to the Filipino roots and foster community. Filipino dinners are more
than just a time to eat; they are a time to bring people together, to keep the heritage alive, and to
create a sense of home wherever you are.
