GLS Biweekly Update August 31, 2022
Letter from the Director
Happy first week of classes, GLS students!
I was delighted last week to welcome 26 new students into our ranks –the largest and most diverse fall class GLS has had since 2013. You can read more about these wonderful colleagues here. Although each student’s motivations and specific plans for their time in GLS are unique, there are significant overlaps in some of their interests, and I look forward to seeing them (you!) grow over the next several years.
This fall marks the start of my fourth year as the GLS Director. With the advent of the pandemic midway through year one, each year has had a very different character and mood. Although COVID-19 is still with us, and we must remain careful, I sense an openness and optimism this year that feels a bit new. The more upbeat mood comes across in the Fall ’22 edition of our new student GLS Spotify playlist – favorite songs of the moment suggested by incoming students (with four contributions from our staff as well). Check it out, and see if you can figure out who nominated which song.
We also welcome a new instructor to our community this fall. Dr. Rachael Murphey – who spends most of her time in undergraduate academic advising -- joins longer-term faculty Mr. Chris Sims and Dr. Susan Thorne in offering our fall GLS seminars. Dr. Murphey and I first met at our joint alma mater and former employer, that light-blue university in Chapel Hill, and I’m thrilled to bring her on board with her Race, Adoption, and Foster Care course.
I’m also happy to welcome two new members to our GLS Advisory Committee. Dr. Amanda Starling Gould and Dr. Charlie Thompson will be familiar to many of you, as they have taught courses and advised master’s projects and independent studies for us in recent years, and Dr. Thompson served as our Commencement speaker last May. Dr. Thompson is faculty in Cultural Anthropology, while Dr. Gould remains with GLS part-time while having just started a new job as the Manager of Innovation & Technology at the nonprofit Partnership for Public Service. These two colleagues join Dr. Jon Shaw, Dr. Leo Ching, Dr. Amy Laura Hall, and Dr. Mark Olson in helping us guide the GLS ship.
In the midst of all the good news, we are sorry to say that the upstairs air conditioning in the GLS House, which has been broken since mid-July, is not yet working. Therefore, our staff’s hours at GLS will remain limited, and the best way to reach us will still be by email. We hope for a fix soon and will let you know when everything is back up and running there!
Finally, read on below for more about our fall events, including our virtual Professional Development event on 9/22-9/23 and several GLS House Porch Sittings starting on September 8th!
Here’s to a great fall for everyone!
Warmly,
Anne

New Students Hike the Eno

On the morning of Thursday, August 25, eight intrepid GLS students participated in the first-ever Orientation Week Hike, in Eno River State Park in northern Durham. They spent a pleasant hour and a half walking 2.4 miles with Assistant Director Kent Wicker along the Cole Mill and Bobbit Hole trails. They saw some turtles, heard a kingfisher, climbed on some river rocks (only one person got wet!), and had a lot of good conversations. Everybody survived. They were happy to experience the local Durham outdoors and to get to know each other better as well.
