GLS Update January 19, 2023

From the Director

Happy Spring 2023 Semester, GLS Friends!

I hope your holiday time provided opportunities for rest, friends, family, and whatever brings you joy. I was pleased to be able to spend time with family, friends, and the outdoors! My Lenten Roses are pruned, with their winter shoots emerging, and various household projects inched ever forward.

We are thrilled this spring to welcome four new students to join our community: Sam Hummel, Zach McWhorter, Chase Pikarsky, and Quiana Tyson. I’m also delighted this semester to have four excellent scholars teaching for us: our own Kent Wicker, along with Michelle Dove, Robin Kirk, and Amy Laura Hall. I know that everyone in their classes will have rich and meaningful learning experiences.

With the mixed messages about COVID this spring, we are again experimenting with work schedules and time at GLS House. For now, you can count on us being there most of the day each Wednesday, when we’ll have our regular staff meeting and afternoon “Writing Wednesday” time for folks working on master’s projects. Various members of the staff are also here at GLS at other times (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons), but if you’re looking to see someone in particular, definitely email them in advance to set a meeting.

Porch sitting will start up in March, once daylight savings returns.

Meanwhile, be sure to read these emails each time they come out, as they contain important “must-do” information and links to campus opportunities. Getting the most out of GLS is a balance between rigorous coursework and taking advantage of the robust co-curricular and extra-curricular offerings around campus. Let us know if we can help you with anything.

Be well!

Warmly,

Anne

GLS NEWS!

Congratulations to GLS students, Hayes Bearman, Harriet Carlton, and Jie Yu, who received the 2022-2023 Dean's Research Award.

Andrea Larson, Carolina Duke Program in German Studies, and GLS alumni received the 2022-2023 Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

GLS alumni Janet Shaw turned her Master's Project into her book. Released January 18th under her pen name, Janet Malcolm Hayles, you can find Every Three Hours: A Mother’s Story of Raising a Child with Chronic Illnesses from Car Seat to Career on Amazon and Barnes & Noble via paperback and ebook.

Veronique Koch, a GLS student, was featured in Duke Today. Koch talks about creativity and well-being while working full-time and being a student.

A big thank you to everyone who joined the MLK Day of Service workday on Monday, organized by GLS student, Pete Crispell. We had three GLS students and two community members who came out to support the project. We planted three trees provided by the folks at Keep Durham Beautiful. We also excavated a 50-foot trench through heavy root growth to install a French drain to protect the foundation of a 103-year-old home at the beginning of renovation to further the mission of Jubilee Home and Jubilee Creations.
