GLS Grad Leads Master's Project Workshop
Efficient Thesis Research and Writing Workshop: The Master’s Project
Tuesday, March 3, 6-7 PM
GLS Conference Room
We have a great opportunity for those who are submitting master’s project proposals this semester or who are in the beginning stages of their master’s project. Duke librarian Beverly Dowdy has offered to facilitate a brief one-hour workshop in efficient thesis research and writing that is targeted to the GLS master’s project. Beverly is herself a recent graduate of Graduate Liberal Studies, so she knows firsthand what the process of planning and implementing a successful project is like. See the GLS website for more details. To register, email Dink or call (919) 684-3222.
Deadline for Abstracts for GradX 2020 Today, March 2
The Graduate School and the Society of Duke Fellows invite all members of the Duke community to attend Duke GRADx 2020, to be held Friday, April 3, 4-6 PM on the 6th floor of the Trent Semans Center. A catered reception for all attendees will immediately follow the event.
Duke's annual GradX talks are a bit like TEDx talks, offering the opportunity to share your master's project or other research with the wider Duke community. Check out the archives for past GradX talks by GLS students Andrea Larson (2017), John Bechtold (2016), Ellen Rivers Gambrell (2015), and Max Erdemandi (2014). The deadline to submit abstracts is Monday, March 2.

John Bechtold (MALS 2017) presents at Duke GradX 2016.
Panel Discussion Tuesday: The Coronavirus: Human, Social, and Political Implications
Tuesday, March 3
10-11:30 AM
Smith Warehouse
Ahmadieah Family Lecture Hall, Bay 4, C105 (map)
On Tuesday March 3, please join the Duke Kunshan University Humanities Research Center in partnership with the Franklin Humanities Institute for a panel on the human, social and political implications of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The seminar presents an opportunity for Duke Kunshan University and Duke University faculty and students to collaborate in a discussion about COVID-19 and share perspectives from China and around the world.
This event is free and open to the public. For catering and logistical planning, please register in advance.
The panel will be preceded by an online forum for DKU students at 8am. Others are welcome - see the FHI website for the full schedule.
Workshop Thursday on Managing Digital Research Materials
Digital Scholarship Workshop I: Managing Archival Materials as Data, with Will Shaw and Joseph Mulligan
Thursday, March 5, 12-1:30 PM
Classroom Building, Room 101
Ever wondered how to store and organize the many photographs and scans you collect during a visit to the archives? How can digital tools make your life as a researcher easier?

In this workshop, participants will learn how to create an archive of visual materials for research using Tropy. Tropy is an image management toolkit that allows users to organize images, record metadata about them, transcribe text from manuscripts or printed material and export data for other uses. This workshop demonstrates how Tropy can be an integral part of your archival research workflows and explores the processes and organizational strategies that allow users to make the most of the software.
Lunch will be served. Contact: Jamal Quick, (919) 684-6811
Institute for Southern Studies Seeks Summer Interns

The Institute for Southern Studies, publisher of Facing South, is now accepting applications for summer internships. An Institute internship is a great way to gain hands-on research and writing experience on issues related to democracy, justice, and sustainability in the South. Internships are paid, typically last 6-8 weeks, and are usually based in the Institute’s offices in Durham, North Carolina. Application deadline is Monday, March 23. See the ISS website for more details.
Call for Presentations: 2020 AGLSP Conference: "History, Heritage & Identity"

Paper proposals are due by March 15, 2020 for the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies (AGLSP) Annual Conference, "History, Heritage & Identity," San Antonio, TX, October 8-10, 2020. The AGLSP is the professional association of GLS programs, faculty and student; Duke GLS is a longtime member. Student papers are welcome: many Duke GLS students and alums have presented at the AGLSP conference.
The AGLSP Conference also features a Story Slam. The deadline for submitting your video is March 31, 2020.
Scott Award Open to Graduate Students Research Women's History

Dr. Anne Firor Scott
The Anne Firor Scott Award is given to help students (undergraduates planning to take the History Senior Honors Seminar and graduates working on seminar projects or dissertations) engaged in research in women's history to spend time in archives and resource centers where they can use original historical materials.
Anne Firor Scott, a distinguished historian and pioneer in the field of women's history, taught at Duke from 1961-1991 and received the National Humanities Medal in 2013, among other honors.

The proposal should describe the student's overall project or the specific resource materials for study, as well as the reasons undertaking the project; the status of work already in process; a budget for requested funds; and explanation of other funds available to the student.
Applications are due on Wednesday, March 18, by noon to Carla Ivey at carla.ivey@duke.edu. Applicants will be notified by email the week of March 30. Winners will be asked to report on the use of these funds and their work by September 1.
